Beekeeper

The Voelker Orth Museum is seeking an experienced beekeeper.  The Museum maintains two bee colonies for its educational programs and to pollinate the garden. The former bee-keeper will be available to support the transition in the Museum’s bee care through the 2025 season. This is a freelance position at $23 per hour.

While much of the care is seasonal, the bee-keeper has primary responsibility for maintaining a safe and healthy bee-hive year-round.

Resident Beekeeper Responsibilities: Maintain the Hives

o   Monitor the health of the bees;

o   Prepare hive for seasons-cycle: spring prep, winterizing, etc.

o   Maintain bee-keeping supplies;

o   Work with museum staff & volunteers to harvest the honey

Be available to respond to any emergencies related to the health or care of the bee-colony.

On limited basis, present the hive as an educational site;

Inform staff of any required equipment and supplies required for carrying out work as the bee keeper;

Keep the Museum informed of any policies, regulations or alerts related to bee-keeping in NYC and aid the Museum in providing information for any registrations/ filings required by public agencies;

Confer with the Museum’s gardener about any special plantings or requirements to support the bee-keeping activities of the museum;

Shared monitoring of hive in winter months;

 Qualifications

·         A minimum of three years of experience working with bees (personal, educational and/or business setting)

·         Ability to interact and communicate effectively with Museum staff, volunteers, and public.

 This is a professional position. Time requirements may vary seasonally.  Pay rate: $23.@hr

Board Members (a voluntary position)

The Voelker Orth Museum is seeking dedicated individuals to support its governance and growth through Board service.

Based in an 1890s Land-marked house in Flushing, Queens, the Museum serves a diverse community with programs in the arts; horticulture & nature science; and local history in a welcoming, inventive, and multi-disciplinary manner.

To achieve its goals and realize its vision, the Board needs individuals with perspectives drawn from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, skill sets, areas of expertise, and lived experiences to help it strengthen the impact of its work. The Museum operates with a small professional staff working in tandem with the Board.

Board members serve on a voluntary basis for 3-year renewable terms. They are expected to participate in six annual meetings, serve on a Board Committee, advocate for the Museum’s needs in the community and among colleagues and peers; and support selected programs.

Prospective Board members should send a letter of interest and resume. Candidates for Board service are asked to complete a short written application and attend a Board meeting before nomination.
